A Coast Guard helicopter crew medevaced an injured 20-year-old Merchant Marine cadet from a container vessel 50 miles off Galveston, Texas, Aug. 27.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Houston-Galveston received a medevac request around 5 p.m. from the master of the Maersk Ohio, stating a 20-year-old female Merchant Marine cadet had sustained an injury to her arm, according to Coast Guard officials.

The watchstanders transferred the case to the Coast Guard District 8 command center watchstanders in the New Orleans area of responsibility. They consulted with the duty flight surgeon, who recommended a medevac.

A Coast Guard Air Station Houston MH-65 Dolphin helicopter air crew that was already in the air was diverted to conduct the medevac. They arrived on scene, hoisted the cadet from the 958’x106’ Maersk Ohio and flew with her to the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston in stable condition.
