Derecktor Shipyards, Mamaroneck, N.Y., has launched a pair of new hybrid-electric ferries for Savannah, Ga. operator Chatham Area Transit (CAT).

The 65' aluminum catamarans, Juliette Gordon Low II and Susie King Taylor II, were launched on Nov. 6 and Dec. 4, respectively.

Upon delivery to CAT in Savannah, the duo will operate on short, continuous routes between three local landings: City Hall Landing, Trade Center Landing and Waving Girl Landing.

The ferries are designed to transport up to 149 passengers at a top speed of 11 knots using BAE Systems HybriGen Power and Marine Jet Power (MJP) Ultrajet 305 dual waterjets. A pair of Cummins 6.7L marine diesel generators will charge the 308 kWh XALT lithium-ion battery systems.

Derecktor is among the United States’ leading builders of hybrid-electric commercial vessels, having constructed six in the past decade.
