Bardex Corporation, Goleta, Calif., released a statement detailing the Lloyd’s Register code for lifting appliances in a marine environment (CLAME), Code Notice 2. Bardex highlighted updates to the code that will affect shipyards looking to install shiplift and transfer systems. The company noted these changes focus on enhancing safety through a risk-based approach, particularly addressing “single points of failure” in the load path by requiring either redundancy or the application of risk factors.

Bardex's principal engineer, Robert Taylor, spoke to the specifics of these changes in a Q&A video below. Taylor touched on compliance issues for shipyards, different methods of defining system capacity, and how the new regulations will affect shiplift designs moving forward. He also explained how shiplift systems are now subject to mandatory risk assessments. Shiplift systems are generally classified as Risk Class 2 or “High Risk” lifting applications due to the potential for damage to both the vessel and the lifting appliance.

For winch-based systems, these updates will necessitate significant redesigns, such as adding secondary braking systems and increasing the size of wire ropes and motors.
