Corvus Energy, Bergen, Norway, recently announced its selection as the supplier of battery systems for nine Statue City Cruises ferries along New York and New Jersey routes.

Since 2008, Statue City Cruises, a Hornblower Group subsidiary, has been the official ferry service provider to the Statue of Liberty National Monument and the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration, transporting roughly four million passengers annually. Additionally, the National Park Service recently awarded a 10-year contract extension to Statue City Cruises for the continued operation of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island ferry service.

The Corvus statement noted the Hornblower Group as an early leader of hybrid-powered ferries in the United States. Hornblower’s Alcatraz City Cruises fleet, was the first to introduce hybrid-powered passenger ferry service in the United States. Two vessels, the Alcatraz Flyer and the Alcatraz Clipper, currently offer service to Alcatraz Island in San Francisco Bay. The operation carries thousands of passengers daily and nearly 1.7 milion annually powered by electric propulsion. Both vessels use a Corvus Energy battery system.

The Statue City Cruises ferries will be equipped with Corvus Orca Energy Storage Systems, the most installed marine energy storage system worldwide, Corvus said, used onboard over 700 maritime vessels around the world. The battery system sizes will vary based on the power needs of each vessel. Partnering with Statue City Cruises, Corvus Energy is working side-by-side with system integrator Karl Senner, LLC for the electrical integration of the battery systems.

In addition to supplying battery systems, Corvus Energy noted it will provide ongoing system monitoring and aftermarket services, including remote troubleshooting, spare parts, service engineers, and training for crew members, to support optimized system performance and lifetime.
