Orion Group Holdings, Inc., Houston, announced in November that its marine division has been awarded a contract to support a wharf expansion project at a container terminal in South Carolina’s Port of Charleston.

The $88 million contract awarded by South Carolina Ports Authority (SCPA) will see Orion Marine construct 1,600 linear feet of concrete pile-supported wharf as a northward extension of the existing Hugh K. Leatherman Terminal.

Originally opened in 2021, the terminal currently offers 700,000 TEU capacity on the Cooper River in North Charleston. When fully developed, its capacity is expected to increase to 2.4 million TEUs.

Orion said its work scope includes the installation of precast, prestressed concrete piles, along with precast caps, deck slabs and stay-in-place concrete tubes, as well as removing dredged material to accommodate larger vessels and placing bedding and armor stone for shoreline stabilization.

The project is scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2025 and is expected to take 20 months to complete, Orion said.

Travis Boone, president and chief executive officer of Orion Group Holdings, said, “The South Carolina State Ports Authority project is a prime example of the growing demand for port expansion driven by larger vessels and increased global trade.”
