Readers can find WorkBoat’s new 2019 Diesel Directory/Power Guide in our July issue, which should hit your mailboxes in the next few days. It’s the 21st directory I’ve helped put together since 1998.

WorkBoat’s annual directory of marine diesel engines click the image to read.

This year’s directory contains more than a dozen manufacturer’s lists of engines for the U.S. marine market. Yes,  our directory does not contain every diesel engine company. Some companies don’t want to participate for various reasons, such as having no engines available that comply with current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations. If we have left a company out that wishes to be a part of the 2020 directory, please contact me at 985-626-0298 or [email protected].

We think our Diesel Directory continues to be a one-of-a-kind listing in the U.S. marine industry. To my knowledge, none of our competitors have anything comparable to it. If there is, I would surely like to know about it.

As for this year’s directory, in spite of the strong demand for electric power propulsion systems during the past 12 months, diesel engines are still king in the marine industry. Engine companies are complying with environmental regulations established by the EPA and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) by introducing new compliant engines to the market.

Man Engines, for example, is now offering 12-cylinder, IMO Tier III engines for workboats, spanning a power range from 551 kW (738 hp) to 1,213 kW (1,625 hp). The engines, which are available now, are also EPA Tier 4 certified with SCR for 1,020 hp, 1,200 hp, 1,325 hp, and 1,450 hp at medium duty and 900-hp and 1,000 hp rated at heavy duty speed.

At November's Pacific Marine Expo, Cummins formally introduced its new marine X15 diesel engine. The engine has been a staple of the company's truck engine line for many years. The first pair of the new Cummins X15 marine engines was installed in Weeks Marine's 65'x17' aluminum crewboat Joseph M. The new 15-liter, six cylinder, in-line engines are each rated at 575 hp at 1,800 rpm.

Volvo Penta was getting ready to release its list of new Tier 3 engines as WorkBoat went to press. Not many details were available prior to the release. However, the company's D-3, D-4, D-6, D-8, D-11, D-13 (except for the medium duty D-13 MH) and D-16 models are all rated Tier 3. In addition, Volvo's D-6, D-8, D-11, and D-13 IPS (integrated propulsion system) models all meet Tier 3 standards. Volvo’s new and updated line of products, include the next generation D4 and D6 propulsion packages, upgraded IPS (Inboard Performance System) and the new DPI Aquamatic sterndrive.

A commercial dive boat in the San Francisco Bay area is the first workboat to sport a pair of John Deere Power Tech 4045SFM85 Tier 3 engines. The new diesels have two power ratings: the M4 is 275 hp at 2,600 rpm and the M5 — 315 at 2,800.

There’s a lot more diesel engine information available in this year’s directory. Remember to keep it handy throughout the next 12 months as a reference until we print the 2020 Power Guide in the July 2020 issue of WorkBoat.
