ABB was awarded a contract recently from All American Marine, Bellingham, Wash., to supply a hybrid-electric ocean sampling catamaran for the Orange County Sanitation District (OC San) in Southern California.

The vessel, scheduled for delivery in 2027, will feature ABB’s hybrid-electric propulsion system, which complies with California Air Resources Board requirements for zero-emission capable hybrid vessels, ABB said.

The 63' catamaran is designed to support OC San’s Ocean Monitoring Program, which has been operating for over 40 years. ABB said its propulsion system will be a key feature of the vessel, aligning with OC San’s environmental goals and supporting the broader shift toward decarbonization in maritime operations. Under California regulations, at least 30% of the vessel’s power must come from zero-emission sources.

“This project represents a significant new investment by OC San in protecting public health and the environment and has also been designed with sustainability at its heart,” Ron Wille, president & COO, All American Marine, said in a statement. “We are delighted to work with ABB, whose hybrid-electric propulsion system will help optimize the vessel in a safe and energy-efficient manner.”

“We are pleased to collaborate with All American Marine on this new ocean sampling vessel,” Drew Orvieto with ABB Marine & Ports, said in a statement. “Our hybrid-electric propulsion technology is an ideal choice for a broad range of vessel types, including environmental monitoring and research vessels.”
