The U.S. Coast Guard released an audio recording on Feb. 12, believed to capture the fatal implosion of the Titan submersible, which occurred on June 18, 2023, during its descent to the Titanic wreck site 900 miles east of Cape Cod, Mass.

The recording, captured by a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) moored passive acoustic recorder located approximately 900 miles from the incident, features a loud noise followed by several seconds of silence. NOAA has approved the release of this recording for investigative use and public access.

The Titan, operated by OceanGate, lost communication with its support vessel less than two hours into its dive, leading to a four-day search before debris was discovered near the Titanic site.

All five individuals on board were killed instantly, including OceanGate co-founder and CEO Stockton Rush, British adventurer Hamish Harding, French explorer Paul-Henri Nargeolet, and Pakistani businessman Shahzada Dawood and his son Suleman Dawood.

The Coast Guard's investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
