On Dec. 6, General Dynamics Electric Boat evacuated its Quonset Point, R.I., facility twice, following two separate bomb threats. The written threats were discovered less than 10 hours apart, leading to emergency response by local, state, and federal authorities. 

The first incident occurred around 10:30 a.m. when police were alerted to a message written on a bathroom stall. Employees were evacuated, and emergency personnel conducted a sweep.  

Electric Boat issued a statement via Twitter: “At approximately 10:30 a.m. local time on Dec. 6, 2024, emergency personnel were dispatched to the 9C building at the Quonset Point facility. Electric Boat is responding according to established procedures to an alleged bomb threat. Local emergency response is underway. The event presents no danger to the general public. To facilitate emergency response/minimize risk to personnel, the affected building has been evacuated. State, local and federal authorities have been notified. Further announcements will be made as more information becomes available.” 

After determining there was no explosive device, authorities cleared the facility for normal operations.

Later that evening, around 7 p.m., a second threating note was discovered. Employees were again evacuated as authorities investigated. GD Electric Boat issued a second update regarding the situation. 

“At approximately 7:00 p.m. local time on December 6, 2024, emergency personnel were dispatched to the 9-series building at the Quonset Point facility. Electric Boat responded according to established procedures to the second alleged bomb threat on December 6. Local and state authorities trained for these situations worked with Electric Boat personnel to conduct a thorough search and sweep of the affected building. No device was found. The facility has returned to normal operations. To ensure employee safety, Electric Boat Quonset Point is conducting additional safety checks across the Quonset Point facility. Electric Boat has instructed Quonset Point third-shift employees working in the 9-series building not to report to work today. No injuries related to this event have been reported. This is an all-clear message. The emergency situation has been resolved. Please resume normal activities. General Dynamics Electric Boat, along with state and local authorities, have completed a comprehensive sweep of the affected building. No threat was found. Electric Boat emphasized that no injuries were reported, and the facility has since resumed normal operations. Local law enforcement continues to investigate the source of the threats.
