Diversified Marine Inc., Portland, Ore., has delivered two new 65'x32'x11'6" ship assist tugs to Brusco Tug & Barge, Longview, Wash. Robert Allan Ltd., Vancouver, British Columbia, designed the tugs to comply with all applicable rules and regulations of USCG, 46CFR, Subchapter M and ABS Class.
The tugs — Rascal and Rowdy — were successfully delivered to Brusco in September 2024. The RAscal 2000-D series tugs sport bollard pulls over 40 short tons, the highest rate designed to date by Robert Allan Ltd.
The compact tugs are well suited for harbors where smaller though still powerful ship assist tugs are needed, as well as being available for general harbor and coastal towing, according to a statement from Robert Allan Ltd. announcing the delivery. The compact wheelhouse allows the tug to get under the flare of even smaller vessels with a folding mast allowing reduced air draft.
The top tier of bow fendering is a Schuyler laminated fender, which is designed for resisting wear. Lower tiers at the bow, down to the waterline, are softer Schuyler SRD-D3 loop fenders with additional loop fendering at the stern and aircraft tires fitted along the sheer.
Rascal and Rowdy feature two Caterpillar C32 main engines, rated at 1,450 hp at 2,050 to 2,150 rpm and meet EPA Tier 4 emissions requirements with use of an SCR diesel exhaust aftertreatment system. The engines power two Berg MTA 522 Z-drives fitted with 87" fixed pitch propellers.
The electrical plant consists of two identical diesel gensets, each with a power output of 99 kW 480V, 3-Phase, 60 Hz.
Tankage includes 6,900 gals. fuel oil; 1,100 gals. potable water; and 500 gals. diesel exhaust fluid.
Sea trial results showed the RAscal 2000-Ds met all requirements of the design.
Two double crew cabins are provided in the lower accommodation, along with a spacious mess and galley.
